Yakult Looking For Nickname For Foreign Trio
The Tokyo Yakult Swallows are looking into asking fans to submit nicknames for the foreigner trio of Alex Ramirez, Adam Riggs, and Greg LaRocca. The team might soon be asking fans to submit their ideas for nicknames through the team's official internet/mobile websites.

Any ideas?

I suppose it's too obvious to suggest "ARG!" (along the lines of Hanshin's "CIA" and "JFK").

I was thinking of something like "Three amigos" or something like that, but you guys are much better than me at this! ARG = awesome!

What does ARG mean? Are you using initials from the 1st or last names?

I was totally kidding, but yes, a mix of first and last names, sort of like the whole Chris-Igawa-Andoh or Jeff-Fujikawa-Kubota thing. I guess they could do "RAG" instead, and play ragtime music whenever any of the guys comes in.

Okay, I'm even more kidding now.

BTW, the Swallows have actually gone official with this request now. Those of you that can understand Japanese can enter through the official homepage, or their mobile page. I took a brief look at the rules from the mobile site, and it stated you could win a "special prize." I have no idea what that means though.

I still can't come up with any good nicknames. It'll be interesting to see what the winning name is.

Triple Threat.

Wouldn't Ra-Ri-Ro wind up sounding like La-Li-Lo?

So, if we transpose them, we could get La Loli, and have them wear little girls' uniforms on those "special" days.

How about Whack Pack?

Their name has been chosen as the F-Brothers, which is just horrible, in my opinion. The "F" stands for Furuta, like the "F Project" gimmick they have going. I think something that used the Godzilla monster Ghidorah would've been cool, since it's a three-headed monster. If they're just gonna do something as uninspired as the F-Brothers, they might as well have no nickname at all.

Do the players like their nick name? Have they said anything?

The three of them picked it out of 1,000 entries, so they must have liked it.

Doesn't this process seem kind of artificial? I mean, nicknames usually just happen, with a newspaper writer coining a name and then it catches on, or it's based on something a player has said or done. But here we have an official contest in the fashion of a zoo finding a name for a new baby gorilla or something. Why do they actually need an official nickname? Just to compete with the Tigers? If they're popular enough, the nickname will just happen. No need to force it.

Nomura (my candidate for the baby gorilla).

I agree with mijow - this artificial exercise is a bit of a farce.

I agree with you to some extent. The nickname does seem a little forced.

But it's really just part of the F-Project/raising the Swallows' public profile. Anything that gives Yakult some attention has to be a good thing in my book. After all, there's only so much Hanshin/Yomiuri coverage that one can take!

Artificial? Yes. Japanese? Absolutely.

Nomura for baby gorilla? Awesome.

And Aoki for Prime Minister, Pooh-san as his number two, and Kitty-chan for his mistress. Rock it.

Throw Iwamura in there and it should be the four horsemen.
