Yano Owns Stars

Yano Owns Stars
Hanshin's Yano in tonight's game (May 5, 2006 - Kodomo no Hi [Childrens' Day]) at Yokohama Stadium hit home runs in three consecutive at bats in Hanshin's 13-11 defeat of the BayStars.

Yano drove in a run in the second on an infield grounder to third. Then he hit a 2-run homer in the third, a 3-run shot in the fourth (pretty much putting the game away at the time), and a solo home run in the sixth that put Hanshin up by a score of 12-5. After grounding out (into a double play, I think), Noguchi came in to catch and give Yano a well deserved rest.

The three home runs by Yano doubled his home run total for the year with 6. Coincidentally, all six home runs have been off of Yokohama pitching. Yano has really owned Yokohama pitching this year.

Yokohama did make it close with 5 runs in the 8th inning. But after the first to batters got on in the 9th, a double play killed the rally and Ishii Takuro grounded out to end the game. [I've still got some mixed feelings about Ishii. He's been brilliant with the glove, but is not hitting like a lead-off hitter should!]

Yeah that sure was a wild game! And to their credit, Yokohama kept coming back. I thought the Tigers had it in the bag at 13-6. A true nailbiter.

The game was 11-1 after 3 1/2 innings, yet I didn't give up. I did moan every time Ishii and Saeki came up, though. But they both helped in the 5-run BayStar 8th inning (where the Hanshin lead was cut to two).

Darwin looked very good for Hanshin. I was afraid that he'd stay in there longer, giving us no chance at all. Fortunately (for Yokohama), he only worked two innings and we were able to get to Asahara and Kanazawa. Kubota was also a little shaky to start the 9th. In fact, the last few times I've seen Kubota, he's struck me as not having it all together.

Well, Yano has been a big part of Hanshin's 7 and 0 record against Yokohama this season. It's not often that we can score 11 runs to lose. But Yano's 7 RBIs saw to that.

Although I must say that Fujimoto extended the 8th inning needlessly by calling for that high pop that drifted back over his head and fell in. It looked as if the outfielders had that covered. A successful out there would have probably limited that 5-run inning to ... 0.

But you guys deserved the win today. We couldn't get anything going against some formidable pitching.

More like amazing luck I'm afraid. All the hits went the BayStars way, and whilst the Tigers would ground out, BayStars batters would get lucky bounces which defeated the infielders. That being said, it was a great atmosphere as the BayStars' support was out in strength.

Oh Christopher, I think that's being a bit churlish, don't you think? Lucky bounces are all part of the game. I thought (meaning "in my opinion, not a necessarily a fact") the BayStars' defense was very solid, and although they had some luck, everything considered, I think they deserved the win.

Well, I'm not going to dispute that they deserved to win. However, their defense wasn't that solid and their pitching was very ordinary (except for Kroon who really was excellent) - Kinjoh was definitely slow, and their mistakes and fumbles all worked out their way. When Kanemoto hit a pitch which bounced off Doi's leg into the path of second for an easy out you knew it wasn't going to be the Tigers' day.
