Atlanta-Hanshin Working Agreement

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Atlanta-Hanshin Working Agreement
The Atlanta Braves have announced that they have reached a formalized working agreement with the Hanshin Tigers. The press release is here [MLB.com].

Dayton Moore, Atanta's Assistant General Manager/Baseball Operations said: "This agreement will help us in building a strong and trusting partnership as we seek and exchange information that allows us to acquire talent from Japan."

Mmmm. I hope there's something in it for Hanshin. I wouldn't want to see too much Hanshin talent acquired by the Braves.

One other thing bothers me. The press release talks about how the agreement is with "the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese League." I'm sick and tired of American jornalists, commentators, and obviously now baseball officials referring to "the Japanese League." [sic] There is no such thing. Japanese teams belong to either the Central Leage or the Pacific League. There is no Japanese League. Why can't they just do some basic research before writing their articles?

I understand your rant about "Japanese League" completely. When someone posts something like that, or more often "Japanese Major League," I edit it to say "Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB)" which is the organization covering the Central and Pacific Leagues, as well as the farm Western and Eastern Leagues.

I really need to spend some time on putting together a FAQ for North American press organizations.

The Atlanta-Hanshin working agreement leads me to ask: what other working agreements are currently in place between NPB and MLB teams? I know that I have read of other such arrangements in the past.

I know that the Kintetsu Buffaloes used to have one with the LA Dodgers, and then there's the Yomiuri Giants-NY Yankees agreement.

But what each team gets out of these deals is often unclear.

I remember that some years ago the NY Yankees had some kind of "relationship" with the Nihon Ham Fighters. It didn't add up to much. Nor do I see much from the Yankees' current "association" with the Yomiuri Giants. There were hopes we'd see some Yomiuri Giants games on the Yankees cable network YES but that hasn't happened, to my knowledge.

Maybe this recent agreement means that Bob Horner wants to visit Japan again.

I might bw wrong, but I think the Fighters also have one with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

That indeed is true, The Nippon Ham Fighters have a Diamondback Day or somekind of MLB day if I remember right.

The Swallows and the Indians may still have a working agreement.

Considering that Trey Hillman used to manage in the Yankees system, that working agreement between the Fighters and the Yanks could have ultimately resulted in them choosing Hillman for their manager (I don't think it was just because he was a Rangers farm director; Texas has almost no presence or following in Japan).
