Alex Cabrera

Discussion in the Rumor Mill forum
Alex Cabrera
Does anyone have an update on the contract status or plans for the future of Alex Cabrera? Would he be able, if he wanted, to go to MLB next season? Thanks.

I found this note posted on August 4th on BaseballAmerica.com that said,
Seibu first baseman Alex Cabrera will remain in Japan for the 2004 season after he signed a one-year contract extension. It had been rumored the ex-Diamondback, who hit 55 homers in 2002 to tie the all-time single-season Japanese record, might return to the major leagues.

Alex Cabrera will be in Japan for 2004, but if he hits 55 more home runs, you can bet he'll be back in the major leagues.

As the position of shortstop is becoming a power position, more teams, such as the Mets, Mariners, and Padres are looking for a shortstop with power. Cabrera, if not a fluke, can provide the needed power. Therefore, while his status for 2005 is up for grabs, big power numbers will mean big paychecks in the MLB for Alex Cabrera in 2005.

[Admin: You do know that Cabrera is a first baseman, not a shortstop, right?]

He might be confusing Alex with son Ramon, who is a teenage shortstop in Venezuela.

... or Miguel Cabrera, a former shortstop who plays third base, right, and left fields with National League Champion Florida Marlins.

He has one more year to go, but he said his future is in Japan. If a Major League team doesn't offer him a regular spot he won't go. If he puts up 50 home runs again, you can bet that many Major League teams will look foward to getting his contract.

Kazuo Matsui is making noise. Imagine what Cabrera can do.

Look at H. Matsui. He hit 50 HR's in Japan, but only hit in the 10's in the MLB. Maybe Cabrera can provide hits. But certainly not power. (Well, maybe 20HRs.)
