Another former NPBer that I forgot to mention is former BayStar Rafael Betancourt, who's come into his own this season with the Cleveland Indians.

There is an article here [DailyNewsTribune.com] about former BayStar Lou Merloni. Although he was a bust here in Japan, he has a cult following in the U.S. One of his fans even made a web site as a tribute to Lou.
This article demeans NPB in that it talks about how "lucky" Kevin Millar is that he's in Boston and not Japan this year. Sure, Millar is having a good year in Boston, but who's to say that he wouldn't have had a Tuffy Rhodes-type career here in Japan. Some writers are so smug.

Another ex-NPBer has been called up to the majors. Fernando Seguignol, the former BlueWave bust, has just been called up by the Yankees, of all teams. He was the International League's MVP this season. Seguignol last played in the big leagues in 2001.

It's been a banner year for ex-BlueWave foreign players. Joe Vitiello is now playing for the Montreal Expos and Carlos Pulido is back in the major leagues with the Minnesota Twins.
Before this season, Pulido last pitched in the big leagues in 1994. He returned to the Twins this season after a circuitous journey through Asia, independent leagues, etc. He actually made a start yesterday for the Twins, but he didn't get the win.

I know the writer. And with the great majority of media types in Boston, they just don't get NPB or its place in the overall place in baseball. They don't follow it, even casually. To start the season, most around here had the Matsui grand slam and Wasdin's perfect game in the minors, but never mentioned they were team mates last year - because they didn't know!
I also think it works both ways. For every article in the U.S. looking negatively on the quality of play in NPB, there are those article refering to "Dragon Turncoat Millar"! There's always a bias. It's inevitable.

Some other notable former NPBers enjoying success recently are former Yakult Swallow Mark Smith, who hit a homer for the Brewers last week after returning to the Majors after a long stint in the minors, and former Daiei Hawk Brian Banks, who is contributing nightly to a very good Florida Marlins' team. Former Chunichi Dragon Kevin Jarvis and former Yomiuri Giant Elmer Dessens are having so-so seasons with the Padres and D-backs. Former Dragon Matt Stairs is playing well for the Pirates, and former Hanshin Tiger Eduardo Perez is playing well for the Cardinals as well.
