Nomo to Start Season at AAA

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Nomo to Start Season at AAA
Pitcher Hideo Nomo of the Chicago White Sox will start the season at AAA Charlotte. Nomo is 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in 3 games this spring.

Nomo was signed to a minor league contract by Chicago earlier this spring. Nomo went 5-8 with a 7.24 ERA in 19 games last year with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays before being released outright by Tampa. The Yankees signed him to a minor league contract where he finished out at AAA Columbus. [Full Japan Ball Article] [MLB Stats]

Hi, it's my first message on the forum and I wonder if there is any chance to see Nomo play with the White Sox this year in MLB? When a pitcher begins in AAA, is it usual to see him pitching with the majors, or is it barely impossible?

Nomo is my favorite pitcher and I hope for him to have a nice end for his tremendous career.

You may have to wait till September when the rosters expand. The White Sox are loaded with starters and Nomo hasn't been all that well these last few years. Chicago has Brandon McCarthy who will get the first call at any starter spot should a injury occur or someone falters.

Chicago really wasn't the best team for Nomo to choose if he wanted to make it back to the majors.

Agreed, the White Sox have Buerhle, Garland, Vazquez, Garcia, and Contreras - all solid major league pitchers. And they are very high on McCarthy. They almost traded Contreras just to make room for him.

Nomo had trouble sticking with the Devil Rays and Yankees last year. the Devil Rays had a need for veteran pitching, and the Yankees tried guys like Tim Redding, Shawn Chacon, Aaron Small, and Al Leiter.

I doubt if Nomo makes it to September with them unless he pitches drastically better. He seems to be at about the end of the road. I'm not even sure they'd call him up in September, and he likely wouldn't see much time as they will probably be in the thick of a playoff race with the Indians and possibly Twins.
