T. Batista: Will He Return to MLB?

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
T. Batista: Will He Return to MLB?
Will T. Batista return to MLB when his contract expires next year, I believe? I guess the question is, is he happy there?

Batista left MLB in a huff following a lack of serious big contract offers. I do think he could return as a role player here.

He was not in the league leaders in the NPB last season. Did he get hurt?

TIA

I haven't heard about his contract, but I believe he didn't live up to his expectations. He was the second highest paid player last year.

No, he didn't get hurt, he played 135 games but only posted about .750 OPS. Hmm. I had the impression that he did better, but I guess not. Must be the 90 RBI.

Batista was healthy all of last year, and was in many of the league leaders categories last season. Such as Total Bases, Home Runs, RBI's, Doubles, Extra Base Hits, and Runs. [2005 Pacific League Leaders - Borisov's Pro Yakyu]

Batista started out strong, but faltered as the season went on. His wide-open batting stance led to a low on base percentage as expected (.294), and a lower than expected OPS (.757). Combine that with all the strikeouts, too (115). [2005 Hawk Stats - Borisov's Pro Yakyu]

Batista was having a great year until he started struggling as the season went on. Overall, the season wasn't a total failure, just not up to what I expected at his salary. I wish Batista would have taken the advice of Orioles' hitting coach Terry Crowley and shortened his swing a bit. I really like Batista as a player.

It looks like Batista went to Japan and performed almost exactly as he did in MLB.

He's always been a good power hitter with an atrocious K-BB ratio. It's not like a lot of the gaijin players come to Japan with good OBP skills.

There is a saying about players from the Dominican Republic "You can't walk off the island." This means that players from DR are known for being free-swingers because they feel they will get noticed by scouts because of their batting average. Perhaps the island they are referring to is Honshu or Kyushu now and not Hispaniola.

Well, Batista was released by the Hawks, December 2nd. The Hawks decided to go with a younger position at third.

The Hawks will pay Batista 525 million yen ($4.38 million USD, 1USD=120yen) for next year. I can't say I didn't expect this and can't fault Softbank either, as Batista, even though I like him at $4.38 million, at .263/.463/.294 isn't up to par. Batista is now probably looking at a MLB backup job or possibly moving to Korea maybe. [See also this thread.]

Batista will be returning to the majors, the Twins signed him to a one year deal. The terms of the deal were undisclosed. [MLB News]

Here's a good story that talks about Batista's departure from the NPB last year. [ Click to reply to this topic  Reply to this post
