M's Decline Option on Hasegawa
The Mariners declined their 2006 option on relief pitcher Shigetoshi Hasegawa. Hasegawa went 1-3 with 0 SVs and a 4.19 ERA in 46 games last year. He leaves the Mariners with a career 15-16 record, 17 SVs, and a 3.46 ERA in 240 games. He was a 2003 All Star. [Full Story - Japan Ball]

Overall, Hasegawa has a career 45-43 record with 33 SVs and a 3.70 ERA in 517 career games with the Angels and Mariners (1997-).

I don't think he was ever going to have a chance to stay in Seattle beyond 2005. Is there a chance he might come back to Japan, possibly with his former team, Orix?

There's a chance, more of a chance than Nomo in my opinion. Though I think Hasegawa will be signed on a one year deal next year by a major league team.

Making it more likely that "Shiggy" will sign on with another MLB team is the fact that Hasegawa is the only Japanese player to make his off-season home in the U.S.A., in Newport Beach, California.

He's a funny guy, in either language. I wish him the best, but age is working against him.

Yes, Shigetoshi and Eddie Guadardo were the team clowns and pranksters.

Shiggy was great at press interviews in both languages. Hasegawa and Brett Boone were probably the most popular among their teammates in the clubhouse.

In my mind, I'd love to see Shiggy as a pitching coach somewhere - I think he'd be valuable on either side of the Pacific due to baseball skills, people skills, and language skills; he could either work with a foreign manager in Japan such as Bobby V, or work with Japanese pitchers and players who come to America.

But yeah, his time in Seattle is over; that was pretty obvious this year. It's kind of sad - I really like him too, he's such a nice guy. But there's just no way we can expect to see him repeat his 2003 numbers ever again.
