KBO Draft Dodging Scandel
Thomas St. John wrote two articles in the Korea Times -
"Mr. Yagu: Scandal Rocks KBO Teams" on September 7th, and "Mr. Yagu: Pro Baseball Facing Biggest Crisis" on September 8th concerning the arrest of six KBO players and the possible arrest of up to 35 more players over military draft dodging allegations.

Korean men are required to serve two years in the Armed Forces unless thay can get a medical release. The scandal involved the tampering of urine samples.

Kim Rahn writes in the September 9, 2004 Korea Times [Link] that the Korean Military Manpower Administration announced that 50 KBO professional baseball players since 1996 manipulated urine tests in their attempt to avoid mandatory military service. 29 current players have been questioned and nine have been arrested as the investigation continues to grow. The MMA also expanded the punishment from 1-3 years to 3-5 years prison time.

Thomas St. John has a another column on this scandal [Link - Korea Times]. Now up to 110 former or present players are under suspicion for altering urine tests to avoid mandatory military service.

St. John also blasts the KBO commissioner's lack of action or direction in this matter.

Kim Hyun-cheol wrote in the September 15, 2004 Korea Times [Link] that Jung Sung-ki, a minor leaguer in the Atlanta Braves' farm system, had been arrested on draft-dodging charges.
