Discussion in the KBO News forum
KBO Commissioner Park Resigns
KBO Commissioner Park Yong-oh resigned Friday, November 25th. Park is resigning because of trouble following his decision to refuse to follow the Doosan board of directors to choose Park Yong-sung (his younger brother) as Doosan chairman. He admitted to being involved in accounting fraud.

The commissioner filed a complaint with the prosecution that Yong-sung, who's a IOC (International Olympic Committee) member and President of the International Judo Federation, created slush funds from company money and masterminded the accounting fraud at Doosan Industrial Development.

Shin Sang-woo (a former National Assembly Vice Speaker) is being mentioned as a replacement for Park. Numerous newspapers have reported that Shin will replace Park, and has already been nominated by the government. Though the KBO denied the reports by numerous newspapers and plan to have a meeting in the middle of this month to decide on whether they will elect a new person directly or will accept a government nominee, and then they will announce the new commissioner at a general meeting of the owners of the 8 KBO teams at the end of this month.

Park was the first directly elected commissioner of the KBO. The previous 11 commissioners were nominated by the government. Park was elected in 1998 while he was owner of the Doosan Bears and was the longest serving KBO commissioner. Park was praised for his reform of the KBO and making it profitable.

The KBO has designated Shin Sang-woo, the former National Assembly vice speaker, as KBO commissioner according to the KBO.

The KBO baseball governing body held a decision yesterday (December 26th), and decided to recommend Shin commissioner at the next meeting slated for January 3rd, the KBO said in a press conference. The KBO said the decision said the decision was made because there was no other person recommended. KBO secretary general, Lee Sang-kook said, "We asked the owners of the eight baseball teams to put forward someone appropriate, but no one did, So we call on Shin to accept our proposal to take the post of KBO commissioner."

Shin, 69 years old, is a seven-time former lawmaker, and has been mentioned as the most probable person to replace Park as commissioner.
