竜が踏ん張った。中日が阪神に４－１で勝って連敗を止め、優勝マジックを６とした。負ければ巨人に優勝へのマジック２が点灯する一戦で、落合監督の積極采配が奏功した。５回に耳打ちした荒木雅博内野手（３０）が１号３ランで先制し、１失点で好投していたエース川上憲伸投手（３２）を６回で降板させ、継投で逃げ切った。巨人が残り２戦で連勝すれば、６勝１分け以上が必要になる残り７戦でまずは１勝目を挙げた。
