阪神首脳陣と藤川が“絶句”した。４点差の９回無死一塁で藤川がマウンドへ。３７セーブ目がつくと思っていた藤川は「えっ、つかないんですか」と試合後、驚きの表情を見せた。矢野も「ベンチ裏でどっちかなとは話していたんだけど…セーブがつかないなんておれが残念」。野球規則ではこの日４点リードの状況なら走者２人以上が必要。岡田監督も「えっ、ホンマ？ ブルペンにも確認させたんやけどな。球児も『ありがとうございました』って言ってたんや。それやったら（最多試合登板記録がかかる）久保田を投げさせたらよかったわ…」と、首をかしげていた。
