普段は寡黙で物静かな男の怒鳴り声が響いた。同点で迎えた７回２死満塁。遊ゴロで一塁ベースを踏んだ谷が「なんでアウトや！」と一塁審判の有隅審判に詰め寄った。慌てて西岡一塁ベースコーチが制止に入ったが、時はすでに遅し。胸を突かれた有隅審判が退場を宣告し、勝ち越し機が消滅したばかりか、リーグ打率３位の谷が、グラウンドから姿を消すことになった。
