持丸修一監督（５９）の退任は決まっており、学校側は取手二時代を含め、３度の甲子園優勝を果たした名将の復帰に強い意向を持っている。木内総監督も「辞めてから４年もブランクがある」としながらも、「正式に新監督が決まるまではチームに貢献したい」として、当面の間指揮を執る意向を固めている。
木内氏は２００３年夏の全国制覇を花道に一線を退いたが、一昨年から総監督として再びチームを支えてきた。表舞台に立つことになる名将は「甲子園で勝つチームづくりのため、『つなぐ』意識を選手に教えたい」と意気込んでいる。
