長いシーズン、何をやってもうまくいかない時がある。２点を追う巨人が８回裏、盤石の“ＪＦＫリレー”を崩しにかかった。谷の右前適時打で１点差に迫り、なおも２死一、三塁のチャンス。続く小笠原の遊ゴロの際、全力疾走で二塁へ滑り込んだ谷の足は送球よりも一瞬早くベースに到達したかに見えた。しかし、判定はアウト。同点打をフイにされた伊原ヘッドコーチらが必死に抗議したが、判定が覆るはずはなかった。
