ロッテ・バレンタイン、オリックス・コリンズの両外国人指揮官同士が、采配で攻防を繰り広げた。同点の６回だった。先頭ベニーが金子から四球を選ぶと、大松の場面でコリンズ監督は左腕高木。これにバレンタイン監督が代打田中雅で犠打、塀内には代打青野で中前打で１死一、三塁。さらに根元に代えて右の堀をコール、コリンズ監督が右の本柳を出すと、代打の代打ワトソンを送り込んだ。ここで明暗が分かれた。白球が雨中を切り裂きながら、バックスクリーンに吸い込まれる。「無我夢中で何を打ったのか分からない」と殊勲の助っ人は興奮を隠せない。
