マー君が甲子園で初黒星を喫した。楽天の田中将大投手（１８）が阪神戦に先発し、５回を投げて被安打６、失点３で負け投手となった。日本一も達成した駒大苫小牧高時代は甲子園で１２試合８勝０敗を誇ったが、プロ初の登板で不敗神話が崩れた。昨夏の全国高校野球選手権大会決勝で、早実の斎藤佑樹投手（現早大）と引き分け再試合の死闘を演じてから約１０カ月ぶりの甲子園はほろ苦かった。
