悲しき初ヒットとなった。楽天河田寿司捕手（２７）が８回、代打で出場し、新垣の１４５キロ直球をジャストミート。右翼線を抜ける二塁打は、２年目にしてプロ初安打となった。しかし、続く竜太郎の二直に判断を誤り、二塁から飛び出して帰塁できず。「打ったことより、走塁死があったので…。申し訳ない」とうつむいた。野村監督も「ライナーには気を付けろと、散々コーチには言ってるんだよ」とガッカリだった。
