甲子園に怪物が再来した。帝京・大田阿斗里投手（３年）が、７３年の江川卓（作新学院）に並ぶ歴代２位の２０奪三振をマークした。小城（佐賀）戦に先発し、自己最速タイ１４７キロの直球と変化球で７者連続を含む毎回三振を奪った。味方の失策で１点を失ったが、４安打に抑えて９－１で完投勝ちした。早大に進学する斎藤佑樹投手（１８）を擁して優勝した昨夏の早実に続く２季連続の東京勢Ｖに向けて、最高のスタートを切った。
