朝からの強風と豪雨で試合開始も危ぶまれたが、定刻通りに午後１時にプレーボールした。一時は風速１４メートルを記録するなどしたため、選手たちは試合前に飛球の捕球練習を念入りに繰り返していた。高橋慶彦コーチ（５０）は「風が強いのは、この球場ではいつものことだからね」と、まったく意に介していなかった。
