怪物が怪投で１回戦を突破した。第７９回選抜高校野球大会が２３日、甲子園球場で開幕した。大阪桐蔭のエース中田翔投手（３年）は日本文理（新潟）戦で甲子園初先発し、７回１安打無失点でチームの７－０の勝利に貢献した。昨春から右ヒジ痛に苦しんで本来の球威はなく、７四死球と乱れたが、変化球主体で６回２死までノーヒット投球を続け、三振も９個奪った。高校通算７２本塁打の打席では無安打に終わったが、佐野日大（栃木）との次戦は投打で大爆発の予感だ。
