楽天が、西武の連勝を止められなかった。２点リードで迎えた９回、３番手の小山伸一郎投手（２８）がマウンドに上がった。しかし安打と連続四球で無死満塁のピンチを招き、２死までこぎつけたものの、２番片岡に中前打を許し、２者生還。引き分けに終わった。引き分けをはさんでオープン戦９連勝中と好調レオ打線だが、野村監督は「問答無用でしょう」とあきれ顔だった。
