Nakamura Traded to 'Stars

Nakamura Traded to 'Stars
With Chunichi signing Tanishige, Dragon veteran catcher Nakamura found himself no longer the regular backstop and requested to be traded. Yokohama, being the team that lost Tanishige, signed the veteran catcher to a three year contract at 1.25-oku yen per year (including incentives).

I've got mixed feelings about this one. While Nakamura is a veteran catcher deserving of respect, I really wanted to see the 25 year old Aikawa get his chance. I felt that Aikawa did a great job the few chances that I saw him while Tanishige was out last season.

This transaction by the BayStars sure is a bit strange since Nakamura's not exactly a young pup. His power numbers should increase though by a bit I think by playing at Yokohama Stadium. It's kind of ironic that the two teams sort of "traded" their starting catchers to each other. It reminds me of the late '80s when the Yankees signed 2nd baseman Steve Sax away from the Dodgers, who promptly signed Willie Randolph from the Yanks to replace Sax.

I read an interesting article on cbssportsline.com about a week or two ago that talked about how no major league teams showed interest in Tanishige. To add insult to injury, the article referred to Tanishige as "Tamishige." Ouch. I don't think he's bumming too badly though. I just saw him this past week vacationing in Hawaii. Ironically, after getting back to Tokyo I happened to be on the same limousine bus on the way to Hakozaki as former BayStars skipper Gondoh.
