Agbayani To Return

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Agbayani To Return
Chiba Lotte Marines outfielder Benny Agbayani will return in 2008.

It's believed that he will receive a 1 year deal worth 130 million yen. Agbayani batted .272/.368/.426 with 13 HRs and 51 RBI in 122 games and 390 AB's last year.

I like Benny, but his numbers definitely don't warrant his salary. You have to wonder how much influence Valentine had in this decision.

That said, it's not like the Marines have power bats to spare. Plus, even when you find a decent power bat from overseas, they could have a difficult time transitioning to the Japanese game and culture.

I don't understand this move either other than to confirm that Bobby V. is once again taking care of his buddy, Benny. He hasn't produced enough the past two seasons, is injury prone, and is getting up there in age. If the thinking is to have Benny as a sort of #3 option as a foreigner in the everyday lineup after Zuleta and Ortiz, then perhaps he could be useful.
