Seibu Lions Considering Name Change
According to Nikkan Sports, the Seibu Lions are looking into the possibility of changing their team name. The report states that team president Takahashi Gotoh mentioned the possibility during a TV program. Possibilities might include using the team's home town of either Tokorozawa city or Saitama prefecture in the name, since Seibu Railways, the company that owns the team, has its headquarters in Tokorozawa. The team got its current name back in 1978 when Seibu bought the team.

It's actually problemsome because the Stadium is located on the edge of Saitama (Tokorozawa city) and Tokyo (Nishi-Tokyo city) border, on the Saitama side. So, by incorporating Saitama/Tokorozawa, they could alienate some of the Tokyo based fans. A regional name like Musashino, which would encompasse both areas and more, would be ideal. But that's probably too drastic.

And Seibu actually is a shortened version of Nishi-Musashino, but ah well.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is proposing to let the fans help decide the name change. "Taking root in the local community is really important. I'd like to listen to input from the fans, and think about it together," Matsuzaka stated during a contract negotiation session.

Thirty five members of the Tokorozawa City Council unanimously signed a petition agreeing to adopt the name "Tokorozawa Lions" for the team, and the petition was handed over to the Seibu Lions for review. A team representative stated, "We will think about the club name from various points of view, such as the community and the railway."
