Rakuten Releases Three
The Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles released infielder Damon Minor and pitchers Aaron Myette and Matt Skrmetta.

Minor batted .200 (4 for 20) with 0 HR and 2 RBI. Myette pitched to a 0 and 0 record with a 20.77 ERA in 3 games, and Skrmetta pitched to a 1 and 0 record with a 6.14 ERA in 5 games.

What was Rakuten thinking signing this many foreigners? The problem is they never really gave any of these guys a chance. I think the people running that team don't really care for foreign players in seeing how they have handled them this season. Think of all the money they have thrown away. Foreigners are supposed to be helpers, so let them help.

There are two possiblities that I can come up with:
  1. Gathering a lot of low cost foreign players will give the players incentive to battle it out between each other for a top spot, a couple not working out not being a big loss.

  2. The former GM, known to have a number of side businesses for every legitimate business deal, may have gotten a commission for each of the signings.
No, I don't have any evidence for the second one, but it's a possiblity. I'm thinking the first one may be more in line with what Mikitani-owner might have been thinking.
