Question for administrator: Do you prefer that I just post the standings once a week? This past week I started posting the NPB, KBO, and CPBL standings daily.

Some readers like a daily update but I will do what you want.

I like what the readers like, which is daily.

I started a new thread to make it a little easier to find them. The other thread was getting kind of long. Daily updates for a thread that lasts a week seems like a more optimal solution.

I really appriciate the time you're taking to do this. And I'm sure many others do, too. Thank you.

'Stars' Performance and Motoki

- My sympathy goes out to Michael Westbay for the BayStars' performance.

Yea, they go and hit 6 home runs in a game one day, the first time in 25 years for the franchise, then runs are hard to come by again. That's the game.

- Yomiuri Giants' infielder Daisuke Motoki suffered a dislocated left shoulder on Sunday.

I saw it. It looked bad. Have you ever seen someone get hit by a car or scooter when dashing out into the road between two cars? I have. One second he's there, the next he's on the ground. Of course, they showed it over and over in slow motion, and it looked bad.

Kiyohara's second (or was it third?) game back saw him on the bench by mid-game with a pulled thigh. Motoki moved to first from third and Kawai took over on the left side of the infield. With two down and a runner on in the top of the 5th, Arias lifted a high pop up to shallow left field in foul territory. Petagine was out of the running, but Motoki did a great job running back and lifting his glove up to catch the ball like a wide reciever. And just as the ball landed in his glove - BAM! Nishi came in from the side, crashing his head into Motoki's left shoulder. Motoki went down one way, Nishi looked at the falling Motoki, then his eyes rolled back and he fell down the other.

Motoki kept ahold of the ball for the final out of the inning.

Players, coaches, then Tokyo Dome staff with a streatcher came out to the scene. Motoki was in tears, the pain was so great. Nishi walked back to the dugout, but didn't come out to bat. Both were sent to the hospital.

Mori-zen-kantoku's article in today's Nikkan Sports (April 15) has the headlike, "Rethink Peta at First." He criticizes Petagine's ability to play right, and says that he should have been rotated to first after Kiyohara went out of the game.

With Kiyohara unable to stay in a full three game series, it seems to me that the full time first base position could safely belong to Petagine. With the heat he's taking for his defense, it should allow him to concentrate better of his offense, which doesn't appear to have any critics.

Watching Kiyohara reminds me of how painful it is to watch Edgar Martinez every time he comes to the plate. Edgar's hitting is beautiful. But the second he tries to run to first, you wonder if that will be his last play in baseball.
Petagine' Play
[ Author: mike_edwards | Posted: Apr 21, 2003 1:17 PM ]

I also saw that awful collision, probably 20 or more times. And I've gotta say, it had nothing to do with Petagine not being able to get to that ball. How many right fielders anywhere could have made that play? The problem was Nishi not watching Motoki.

Peta's made his mistakes (one throw intended for home which ended up somewhere in the stands on the third-base side, and that sliding attempt he made at a ball that bounced over his head and to the wall), but I don't think he's deserving of all the negative reviews. After all, he's only playing right because Kiyohara cannot play anywhere but first. I swear, Kiyo can't put on his helmet without straining something. I wish folks would get off Peta's back. The guy's playing a new position and he deserves more than 12 games to get used to it.
