Swallows stop latest slide to keep CL race tight

The Yakult Swallows didn’t exactly feast on home cooking, but they walked away feeling satisfied and happy with a 1-0 victory over the Hiroshima Carp on Friday night.

Third-year pro Katsuki Akagawa (6-1) held Hiroshima off the board over 8.1 innings, and Lim Chang Yang extracted him from a jam in the ninth for his 31st save.

The win snapped a three-game slide for the Swallows, who this week fell out of first place for the first time since the end of May. They are a half-game back of Chunichi.

Ryoji Aikawa drove in the game’s only run with a seventh-inning single.

GIANTS 4, DRAGONS 4

Yoshinobu Takahashi’s two-run double capped a four-run rally as Yomiuri came back to tie Chunichi and earn an unlikely draw at Nagoya Dome.

TIGERS 4, BAYSTARS 0

Minoru Iwata (9-12) had one of the best games of his career, tossing a two-hitter and driving in the game-winning run with a fifth-inning squeeze as Hanshin blanked host Yokohama.

Matt Murton went 1-for-4, his infield single in the fourth helping him surpass Randy Bass for the longest Hanshin hitting streak for an import at 26 games. He is tied for the second-longest hitting streak in club history.

PACIFIC LEAGUE

MARINES 9, EAGLES 4

Tadahito Iguchi homered and drove in three as Lotte beat up on host Rakuten.
