Standridge, offensive explosion lifts Tigers past Dragons
The Hanshin Tigers played much of the first half of the season the like they were in captivity.
Now it's a case of, "Who let the Cats out?"
Jason Standridge (8-2) fired his third complete game of the season and Hiroki Ueno doubled and blasted a grand slam as the Tigers ate up the Dragons 9-1 at Koshien Stadium on Wednesday.
The Tigers, JBD’s preseason pick to win the Central League (have since flipped to Yakult Swallows) have come from as many as 11 games under .500 to even their record.
“We struggled for a while from Opening Day, but when the offense started performing better, our winning percentage started to come up,” said skipper Akinobu Mayumi, who had high praise for his starter.
“He had really good movement on his pitches and he kept everything down tonight. I was able to relax [and watch him].”
The right-hander, who lowered his ERA to 1.87 (fourth best in the CL) just praised his teammates.
“They played really good defense behind me and we scored a ton of runs, so it makes it a lot easier to pitch,” said Standridge, who started his career in Japan with the SoftBank Hawks in 2007.
“We’ve been playing great baseball lately and it just makes it easier to pitch,” said Standridge, who was 11-5 last season.
Matt Murton had a single in five at-bats and has hit in 10 straight.
The Dragons, meanwhile, have lost four straight
series and are a season-worst four games under .500.
