World Baseball Classic Predictions?
Who do you think will win the Baseball Classic? My choice are split between Cuba and Japan.

It's so difficult to predict because player conditions will be unknown so early in the season. Dominican and Puerto Rico are looking like the best bets to take them all, I reckon.

Do you think Japan's stock went down since Hideki Matsui and Iguchi withdrew from the Baseball Classic?

There is no doubt that the Venezuelan team is the most balanced in the tournament. They have batting, and their strongest weapon: the pitching.

Venezuela: Champions of the World!

I respectfully disaggree.

I am in the minority which believes that batting prowess can defeat good pitching. When you take a look at the Dominican team, i think their bats will overpower Venezuela's pitching.

Here are the names I remember from the top of my head:

Pujols (an obvious powerhouse)
Soriano
Tejada
Ramirez (Manny)
Ortiz

I think that it's too much for any team to overcome. What we need now is a DR vs. the world game.

Side note: Piazza is on the Italian team. In the same respect, we could put together a team from France and the UK if we wanted to really turn some heads.

2nd round is going to be interesting and full of good matches. The only questions with the first round now are how much of a chance does Panama have to make it out of their group, and who will win Canada vs. Mexico.

If this were anything like a normal tournament that mixed the brackets more in the 2nd round and semi-finals, we could very well be seeing a Caribbean finals. I guess MLB didn't want that for domestic marketing reasons.

Team Mexico definitely has a very good chance of winning it. They are going to defeat Canada and South Africa. Japan has a very good team, too.

No way. The Dominican Republic will blow away any team: look at that roster, Ortiz, Tejada, Pujols, Beltre, Alou, ...

Looks like Vlad is joining DR now, even more firepower!

Canada got blown away by Mexico and bowed out of the first round. So it's Mexico, US, Japan, and Korea in this half of the bracket. And the other half should be DR, PR, Venezuela, and Cuba.

I think the D.R will be the World Baseball Champions with that potent lineup. Even Venezuela and The United States, with their pitching, won't be enough to win it.

Korea is a surprisingly good choice. They beat Japan who is about to beat the United States. That means Korea is better than Japan who is better than the United States, and Mexico is the underdog. My bet is on Korea or the popular DR.

Except that the U.S. just beat Japan.

Except that the U.S. just beat Japan.

With a little help from the umpire.

Nice schoolyard logic there.

It seems to me that anyone seems to be able to beat anyone else on their day. I think the WBC is wide open. But Japan are looking like a long shot after their unlucky loss to the US.

Well Korea just beat USA.

And Mexico beat U.S.

For the semi-finals, which is Korea vs. Japan, it's likely that Korea would win again, for the third time, against Japan.

Likely?

It is possible, without a doubt. Korea won both games by one run because the breaks went their way. (Of course, they also played well enough to make those breaks the deciding factor in both games, too!)

The WBC playoff system is flawed as it should have paired #1 from group A with #2 from group B and so forth. To have Korea and Japan play for the third time is ridiculous in my view. The guys in the U.S. should make it more interesting for the playoffs to involve fresh teams from other groups.

Kimcheedude, it's part of the WBC round-robin tournament rules, and it's also an international sports rule. They also use this rule in other World Cup events like soccer. There's nothing wrong with it.

It is flawed. Not crossing over with the other pool for the final tournament is very unusual, I have never seen it in any major international sporting tournament. It was obviously designed this way so that the U.S. wouldn't have to face a Caribbean squad until the finals.
