Jason Coskrey, the baseball writer for The Japan Times, was born in 1982 in Macomb, Michigan not far outside of Detroit.
His college years were spent mostly at the University of Alabama-Birmingham with a short time studying at the Dearborn branch of the University of Michigan. In college Jason was the sports editor for UAB's university newspaper covering Division-I college basketball, baseball, and soccer while working alongside and learning from a number of journalists. For his work on the university paper, he was named the 2005 UAB Journalism Student of the Year and was also awarded the James E. Mills Journalism Scholarship.
During the summer of 2005 he joined The Birmingham Post Herald as a sports intern, and while under internship wrote for both the sports and metro sections of the paper.
After the Post-Hearld's closing in 2005, Jason worked under media relations director Jeff Duggan with the Chicago White Sox Double-A affiliate Birmingham Barons.
Jason enjoyed a brief stint as a writer for The Marietta Daily Journal in Marietta, Ga. to start 2007 before leaving to take an opportunity to cover Nippon Professional Baseball for The Japan Times.
